Following the group’s very first OTA technique on Monday, Jacksonville Jaguars’ offending planner Grant Udinski shared his very early perceptions of second-overall choice Travis Hunter.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Udinski said via Jaguars on SI. “I’m sure you guys see it, him out here, the dancing at practice. The fun, the love of the game. That’s one of the cool things about not just him but all the guys we brought in, they’re guys that love football.”

Earlier this offseason, one way that Udinski described the new Jaguars‘ offense under Liam Coen was as “multiple.” In short, this means the usage of pre-snap motion, running a variety of plays from a few personnel packages, along with running like-plays, or plays that look similar but are quite different with those concepts building off each other throughout the course of a game.

All of that will play a role in keep opposing defenses off-balance and guessing.

In order to accomplish that and have that element present throughout the offense, versatility is important and doesn’t allow defenses to necessarily get a beat on what’s coming just based on who is on the field or where players are aligned.

Hunter enhances that component with his ability to make plays after the catch, but more importantly, his ability to impact all levels of the field and do so in a variety of ways. That is then enhanced when paired with a presence like Brian Thomas Jr.

“I think that’s apparent, the way they practice,” Udinski added. “It makes our job a lot of fun to get out here on the grass with those guys. Whether it’s on the grass or in the meeting room, it’s that same energy and passion for the game or passion for being around their teammates that they bring every day.”

As Coen said after the draft, while the Jaguars have a plan in place for Hunter to make sure he well-equipped to play both cornerback and wide receiver, everyone will have to remain “fluid” and adjust as needed.

In the early going of offseason programs, the plan was to give Hunter more reps on offense, while of course, still learning the defensive scheme and terminology, and then putting more of those cornerback reps on his plate as the team gets further into offseason programs.

With Hunter playing both sides of the ball, he may not get as many practice reps with Trevor Lawrence as other wide receivers. So, as Lawrence described, communication, both on and off the practice field between the two, will be critical.

“Yeah, you’re definitely going for maximum efficiency. You’re trying to optimize the time, so it’s different. It’s a unique challenge, but it’s a fun challenge, it’s an exciting challenge,” Udinski said.

“He’s the type of guy that because of that passion and the love of the game, who’s up for the challenge and can do it. It’s definitely different compared to the rest of the guys and his schedule. It’s a unique skill set, unique person and a unique player. That’s been fun as well.”
