Austin has actually experienced an increase of criminal activity in the last few years. The APD infamously asked locals to phone call 311 if they obtained burglarized near an atm machine throughout a staffing scarcity in 2023.
In August 2024, locals of the city’s Montopolis community informed KVUE-TV that criminal activity got on the increase and revealed worry for their safety and security.
“It’s making the hair on my arms stand up. To hear eight, nine, ten shots. Just bam, bam, bam. Where are those bullets going?” one neighborhood claimed. “I don’t want to be shot sleeping in my bed.”

The Austin Police Department is proactively exploring the event. ( 7 Austin)
