Ex- LRA rebel leader obtains 40-year sentence– DW– 10/25/2024


A court in Uganda on Friday punished a previous leader in the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel team to 40 years behind bars.

Thomas Kwoyelo was condemned on 44 matters of battle criminal offenses and criminal offenses versus humankind consisting of murder, rape, slavery, torment and kidnapping in August.

The sentence versus Kwoyelo, was introduced by Michael Elubu, the administering court in case at the International Crimes Division (ICD) of the high court in the north city of Gulu.

Elubu claimed that Kwoyelo deserved to appeal the sentence and sentence with a 2 week duration.

What is learnt about Kwoyelo

Kwoyelo, that is 49 years of ages is the very first elderly participant of the Lord’s Resistance Army to be attempted, founded guilty and punished. The team’s owner, Joseph Kony, continues to be at big.

During his test, Kwoyelo’s legal representatives claimed that he was abducted at the age of 12 while strolling to institution in 1987, throughout the very early years of the LRA’s revolt in Uganda.

He was apprehended in March 2009 in the DRC in a suppression versus LRA rebels by local pressures and invested the following 14 years in apprehension as efforts to attempt him dragged out. In April 2023, the prosecution completed its disagreement versus Kwoyelo.

The LRA was established by so-called prophet Kony in the 1980s with the objective of developing a program based upon the Ten Commandments.

During the training course of its disobedience an approximated 100,000 individuals were eliminated and 60,000 kids abducted in a power of fear dispersing from Uganda to Sudan, the DRC and the Central African Republic.
