SIU removes law enforcement agent that fired male 9 times outdoors Cambridge home

There’s “no reasonable grounds” to bill a Waterloo Regional Police Service police officer after the officer shot a man nine times outside a Cambridge home in October 2023, the supervisor of the district’s Special Investigations Unit states.

On Oct 15 2023, police officers were phoned call to a home on Sunnyhill Road by a lady that claimed she had actually been assaulted.

Three police officers showed up on scene following twelve o’clock at night and increased to the front door to consult with the female. Inside, a 34-year-old male remained in the cooking area. He saw the police officers and got a blade, the record states. One of the police officers took out his gun and informed the male to go down the blade. All 3 police officers supported right into the driveway and the male left your home and hopped on top of a maintaining wall surface.

“Within moments, with the knife in his right hand, the [man] began to run on the top ledge of the wall towards the officers. He had taken a half-dozen or so steps when he was met with a volley of gunfire,” the SIU record states.

There were 10 gunfires in overall, 9 of which struck the male and one that entered into a parked squad car.

One police officer fired all 10 rounds. The initially 6 rounds caused the male diminishing the preserving wall surface. When the male stood up in the driveway and began approaching police officers, the exact same police officer fired 3 rounds at the male.

The male began to rise once more when the police officer fired his tenth round. The male stayed on the ground afterwards.

The male “suffered multiple gunshot injuries, including wounds to the chest, abdomen, and both legs,” the SIU record states.

Joseph Martino, supervisor of the SIU, claimed in his record that he was “satisfied” that the “officer fired his weapon intending to protect himself, and very possibly his colleagues” from a blade strike.

“I am also satisfied that the evidence falls short of reasonably suggesting the gunfire was unwarranted. On each occasion that the [subject officer] fired – the first two volleys and the final round – the complainant presented in a threatening manner with a knife, a weapon capable of inflicting grievous bodily harm or death, and was within, or approaching, striking distance of the officers,” Martino composed.

It is feasible the police officer can have pulled back from the male and looked for cover rather than shooting the tenth shot, Martino claimed, yet additionally recognized “the situation was a highly volatile and dynamic one, and there was the risk of the complainant turning the weapon and his hostilities on” other individuals in your home.
