The Maple Leafs, however did make a couple solid splashes before the day was out, acquiring defenceman Brandon Carlo from the Boston Bruins and centreman Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Out west, the Edmonton Oilers were apparently right in the mix to acquire Rantanen, too.

According to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, Rantanen had interest in the Oilers and talks on a contract extension were getting quite serious, but Edmonton didn’t have the trade assets the Hurricanes were looking for, so they went with Dallas’ offer instead.

The Oilers did make a splash late on deadline day, acquiring defenceman Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks in hopes of solidifying it’s D-core for their playoff run.

Marchand traded to Panthers in deadline-day stunner

Maybe the most shocking trade of the day came out of Boston as the Bruins dealt their beloved captain and long-time franchise staple Brad Marchand to their Atlantic Division rival, the Florida Panthers.

The trade was a stunner as many expected Marchand, who has spent the past 15 seasons in Boston, to play out the rest of his career with the Bruins.

Just like it did for many Bruins fans, the deal took Marchand — who was hoping to re-sign with the only franchise he’s ever known — off guard after the two sides couldn’t close the gap on a new deal.

During his introductory presser with the Panthers, Marchand briefly touched on the situation:

“When the trade happened, like I said, I was disappointed and I was sad, but I’m still extremely grateful that I get to come to an incredible place, an incredible team, a very, very, very competitive team… I feel rejuvenated coming here.”
