Coffee cultivators aim to hold off EU logging need

By Gustavo Palencia

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) – The globe’s leading coffee body is readied to demand that the European Union hold off a demand that imported beans originated from locations not related to logging, the team’s head claimed on Wednesday.

The regulation, readied to work at the end of the year, would certainly prohibit sales of coffee – in addition to chocolate, soy, hand oil, timber, rubber and livestock – if business are not able to show the item originates from a location where woodlands have not been reduced in the last few years.

“We can’t meet that date, it is not possible,” claimed Vanusia Nogueira, supervisor of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), in a meeting.

The ICO, a United Nations- connected intergovernmental team, stands for greater than 90% of coffee manufacturing and greater than 60% of usage worldwide. Top coffee manufacturers such as Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia are participant nations.

“It’s a very ambitious deadline,” Nogueira claimed. “We believe that by working with (EU leaders), they might be more open to postponing that date.”

She did not define for the length of time the ICO was seeking to hold off the due date.

Asked concerning the possible consequences if coffee manufacturers did not satisfy the due date, Nogueira claimed the EU “will find some solution.”

“The European people like coffee very much… they will not be left without coffee,” she included.

Nogueira talked at a coffee top organized by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Tegucigalpa.

The virtually three-dozen participant countries of the CELAC are anticipated to shut the top with an affirmation asking for the EU to hold off the logging need day, Honduran Deputy Minister of Coffee Growing Carlos Murillo claimed.
