Aussie tradie and household rack up totally free rental fee by dealing with ‘unmanageable’ intrusive varieties

Australian farmers and land proprietors are familiar with the myriad of intrusive varieties that position a hazard to regional environment and ecological communities. But couple of are as prevalent and devastating as feral pigs.

Authorities throughout much of the nation remain to face the trouble, with the Greater Sydney Local Land Services amongst the numerous biosecurity clothing to advise homeowner this month that “it’s time to tune-up those traps”.

“As we head into autumn and cooler weather, now is the perfect time to dust off those traps and get them into peak working order,” it advised, keeping in mind that capturing feral pigs is most efficient in cooler months.

But for many individuals on the ground, far more is required to take on the huge scourge, with some also transforming to individuals like Reece Ferant, that matured searching feral pigs with his father.

The NSW guy, that is a plumbing by profession and operates in the mines, had the ability to live rent-free in 2015 in a home on a big home near Bathurst, where he and his household were supplied the totally free lodging in return for Reece searching feral pigs and maintaining the populaces away.

“All I had to do was just keep the pig numbers down … The pig numbers were out of control,” he told Yahoo News Australia, adding that he would spend three or four nights out with his dogs to catch and kill the animals.

The populations of feral pigs in the area, with individuals ranging from about 80kgs to 100kgs, meant the farmer was ” shedding a number of lamb an evening, simply obtaining turned out of their skin … specifically around lambing time,” he explained.

Speaking to Yahoo after taking down pigs in Goulburn, Reece said as word gets around, he is often enlisted by property owners who are frustrated and simply need help to reduce local pig numbers which are destroying their livelihood.

“They turn up heaps of ground, making it unbearable to drive through paddocks… The damage they do to fences, the damage they do to ground … these pigs are costing them money,” he said.

President of the Australian Pig Doggers and Hunters Association (APDHA), Ned Makim says the onus has fallen on landowners to eliminate the non-native species — who he likened to rodents because they are extremely prolific breeders, clever, adaptable and eat virtually everything.

Speaking to Yahoo News recently, he said the problem is far bigger than is officially stated, arguing that hunters in 2024 eradicated some four million feral pigs alone.

“The estimation of how many pigs there are in Australia is grossly underdone,” he said. “The minimum number of pigs is thought to be about three million and the maximum about 24 million. We think that it’s at least double that higher figure, and maybe more.”

Australia is estimated to have up to 24 million feral pigs spread across the continent, from western Victoria through New South Wales into Queensland, and across northern Australia. Isolated populations can also be found on a few offshore islands.

They are known to be destructive and can be a “serious agricultural pest”, according to the Federal Department of Agriculture. Feral pigs compete with native animals for food, and their omnivorous diet means they eat native plants but also birds, insects, frogs, small mammals and reptiles.

Speaking to Yahoo News, the former CEO of the Invasive Species Council of Australia, Andrew Cox, likened the species to “mini-bulldozers” and said he was in full support of a cull.

“They upturn the ground for roots, insects and grubs, so they’re a serious problem for many plants and animals. Like feral horses, they’re ecosystem transformers — they’re highly destructive,” he previously said.

While authorities have been promoting traps in recent weeks, they say the devices must be checked at least once every 24 hours so pigs aren’t languishing in the hot sun.

While hunting with dogs might seem unsavoury to some in the city, for Reece it’s the most effective – and humane – way to find and hunt them the pigs as they are killed quickly.

“People feral-pig-problem-grossly-understated-hunters-say” he said, also noting the danger that bait stations can potentially do to other animals.

With feral pigs having such a high breeding rate, an ultimate panacea for the problem is a pipe dream. For now, those like Reece are happy to turn a negative into a positive.
