Aussie snorkeller’s appeal after frightening minute in water: ‘I was stuck’


An Aussie snorkeller entraped undersea, twisted in thrown out angling line, has actually promised to constantly lug a life-saving thing in future as she advocated others to be extra mindful of their activities.

Robyn Larson-Shelton, a seasoned snorkeller and scuba diver, was checking out Bass Point Reserve near Shellharbour on the NSW Illawarra coastline when she found a tangle of angling line. A ” squealing sound” startled Robyn in the water and it was then she realised it was coming from the fishing line pulling on her snorkel.

“The extra I attempted to disentangle myself from it, the extra twisted I was â€Ĥ it simply maintained twisting around me,” she said. As she attempted to free herself, she felt the currents wash her further and further out to sea.

” I drifted out 100 metres attempting to totally free myself â€Ĥ I attempted to discard my fins yet I was stuck from the lines â€Ĥ it was difficult,” she said. ” I had not been ever before frightened for my life yet I did have a couple of nervous minutes.”

Robyn eventually got back to shore but had to “swim very slowly” as her feet were restricted by the fishing lines. The wetsuit she was wearing helped her to float, and she believes without it she would have been in real trouble. She vows to always carry a knife when she goes for a snorkel or dive now and has urged Aussies to do the same — and to avoid leaving fishing line in the water.

“You’re leaving a time bomb for bird life and sea life when you leave fishing lines in the waterâ€Ĥ we have to be much more conscious of our actions,” she said.

Yahoo News has reported on countless cases of discarded fishing equipment causing serious injury and harm to wildlife, from a dead platypus found with fishing line wrapped around its beak to a juvenile dolphin struggling to swim due to line tangled around its fins.

Wildlife rescuers continue to be inundated with incidents involving fishing equipment, with Robyn saying it’s shocking how a ” snorkeller-urged-aussies-to-stop-throwing-fishing-lines-away”.
