The government’s migration system was broken down into three tiers that would determine who would be prioritised for a visa based on the industries that are crying out for workers to survive.
Each tier had its own visa application process, and those who earned over $135,000 per year were fast-tracked for entry to Australia because they were deemed to have specialist skills.
Several crucial trades were initially left off that stream and they were going to be forced to apply through the slower $70,000 to $135,000 a year salary range.
It was a move that Challen described as ” pure and utter inexperience” as the building sector remains in hopeless requirement of even more employees.
But Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has admitted that overseas workers in those essential trades deserve to have their visa process accelerated.

Apprenticeship completions have also fallen 8.6 per cent in the 12 months from March 2023.

The 2022-23 year saw a record net overseas migration intake of 528,000 and Treasury believes that will fall to 260,000 in the 2024-25 financial year.
The government’s permanent migration program is being capped at 185,000 places in 2024-25, while 132,200 places will be allocated to the skill stream to “help address Australia’s long-term skill needs”.
But Challen thinks that number needs to go even lower.
