“The insurance company rejected our claim because it was ‘deemed as foundation movement’,” she stated.

“But we’re still fighting it. We take care of our home, and we put a lot of time and effort into this place. It isn’t rundown.

“These business require to aid us. We pay them for assistance when we require it. Not when they pick.”

Wassell isn’t alone in her fight against her insurer.

The local council has received hundreds of reports from residents who have suffered damage to their properties from the series of quakes and aftershocks.

Nearly half of those people have lodged claims with their insurers and only 9.5 per cent have been approved so far.

A whopping 51.5 per cent of claims have been rejected and 39 per cent of claims remain in limbo.

“Insurance company won’t give more information about where the claim is at, and it has been over a month,” said one resident.

“I have not attempted to claim because the earthquakes kept happening and everyone was saying that their claims keep getting knocked back so it feels like a waste of time,” added another.

“We need help. Nearly all insurance claims rejected. This is financially ruinous,” wrote a third.

“My mental health though has skyrocketed. The minute I feel a shake I go into instant panic mode thinking it’s going to be another earthquake,” commented a fourth.
